EDI Announcements

April 8, 2020

Greetings, Gallaudet Community:

This is a challenging time for students, staff, teachers. and faculty as we adjust to online learning and remote working. All of us in the Division of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion want you to know that we are here to support you. Our work will continue, albeit remotely. This means that many of our programs have been moved online, while others, such as UnityFest, have had to be cancelled.

Three core values guide our work during the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • Care: We care about you and your families.
  • Connect: We will communicate with you on a regular basis.
  • Engage: We will engage you in virtual activities to support your sense of belonging and well-being.

TAPT (Turning a Page Together) will continue to meet via Zoom. Our coordinator, Elvia Guillermo Aguilar, G-’03, has contacted participants with details for weekly online discussions on the books they are reading. Elvia is also coordinating online Mindful Conversations for two groups of students: Hispanic and Latino/a/x students, and Asian and Pacific Islander students. Please contact Elvia at elvia.guillermo.aguilar@gallaudet.edu to learn more about these programs.

The LGBTQA Resource Center is establishing daily office hours and a weekly support group via Zoom. We will also host events via Zoom. Dates and times will be announced soon. We will keep you posted via social media, the Daily Digest, and other mediums. In particular, National Deaf LGBTQ week, April 18-25, will feature online programs. Please contact lgbtq@gallaudet.edu for more information.

Please join us in welcoming to EDI Thuan Nguyen-Lakrik, ’00, our new Manager of Student Advocacy, Development and Mentoring! Stay tuned for information about a new e-mentoring program that she is developing to support students of color, international and LGBTQ students. We are also exploring ways to provide online programming online on diversity topics. The President’s Pipeline Scholarship program continues as before. News regarding plans for Camp Catch Them Young will be sent out periodically.

We have not forgotten the community’s call for faculty to enhance their cultural competency. Dr. Ndura is working with Student Success Coaches to offer a diversity training webinar later this month as part of the overall faculty cultural competency initiative.

In other words, EDI is continuing our work – just online. Check out our brand new Facebook page. Please “like” the page to stay current on our news, events, and interesting factoids!

You can reach us by sending an email to edi@gallaudet.edu, or by calling 202-688-0386 videophone.

EDI wishes you all good health and a successful learning experience for the remainder of the semester! We will be in touch soon!

Sincerely,

Dr. Elavia Ndura
